What's wrong with your zip?

Choose the closest match. No technical vocabulary needed.

02 / CHECK BEFORE YOU FIX

Are any teeth missing or visibly distorted?

AWAITING INSPECTION

Look closely. Pull gently.

Inspect the chain in good light. If it is intact, a correctly matched replacement slider may help. Do not squeeze it blindly with pliers.

Guided observations, not a physical inspection or guaranteed repair.

Less damage.

Your selected symptom follows you here. Work one step at a time and stop when resistance or damage appears.

THE WRONG FIX EXPERIMENT

What if I pull harder?

Extra force does not remove an obstruction. It can transfer the load to the teeth, tape or bottom pin. Compare the concept illustration below.

Do not yank, cut teeth, or clamp the slider without checking the cause. Stop if fabric starts to tear.

Waterproof, protective and specialist equipment: follow the equipment maker’s instructions and use an authorised repair service.

Meet the mechanism.

A slider guides. Teeth interlock. Tape carries the load. Select a component to understand its job.

The interlocking elements form the chain. Missing elements or a damaged coil cannot be repaired by changing the pull tab.

04 / MATERIAL SPECIMENS

Not every zip is alike.

Identify the chain before choosing a slider. The same nominal size does not guarantee compatibility.

SPECIMEN / 001

Metal chain

Individual metal teeth; common on denim and leather. Match the exact chain profile and slider series.

SPECIMEN / 002

Coil chain

A continuous spiral coil, sometimes reverse-mounted. Check coil orientation and the manufacturer’s compatible slider.

SPECIMEN / 003

Moulded plastic

Individually moulded teeth. A coil slider is not interchangeable, even when the size marking looks similar.

05 / REPAIR OR REPLACE?

Save what still works.

Choose the smallest suitable intervention after inspecting the whole chain.

Parts compatibility notebook

First identify the chain. Record maker, slider markings, chain width when closed, orientation and locking type. This tool cannot certify a replacement part.

07 / THE FIELD GUIDE

Better questions.
Better repairs.

Why does my zipper separate after zipping?

Possible causes include distorted or missing elements, coil damage, or a worn slider. Inspect the whole chain first. If the chain is intact, a compatible replacement slider may be an option; the screen alone cannot confirm wear.

How do I release a zipper stuck on fabric?

Stop pulling. Keep loose fabric away from the mouth and gently move the slider back to create slack. Stop if resistance remains or the fabric starts tearing, and seek a repairer’s help.

Can a new slider repair missing zipper teeth?

A replacement slider cannot restore missing elements. Metal, coil and moulded chains have different construction constraints. Ask a repairer to assess the damaged location and whether the chain or entire zipper needs replacement.

Why will my zipper not stay up?

Reduce excessive garment tension and inspect the pull position and locking mechanism. Not every slider is an automatic-lock type. A damaged lock may require a compatible replacement slider.

Are sliders with the same number interchangeable?

No. Manufacturer, series, tooth profile, coil orientation, locking design and two-way construction all matter. Closed-chain width is a reference measurement, not a complete compatibility test.

Should I use oil or pencil graphite on a stiff zipper?

These can stain fabric or harm coatings. Remove loose dirt first and use only care products approved by the item maker. Waterproof and coated zippers require product-specific instructions.

Can a zipper that came off one side be rethreaded?

A repairer may be able to rethread an intact chain when the construction permits it. This can require removing and correctly replacing a stop. Do not cut teeth to experiment.

What should I take to a repair shop?

Bring the whole item, the marked fault location, slider markings on both sides, the closed-chain width and a description of when the fault occurs. The rescue passport is a useful observation record.

Care lab: a quieter next pull

Keep the chain free from sand, loose threads and lint. Reduce sideways strain before operating. Follow the garment’s washing and drying instructions, protect the slider when laundering, and inspect the pin before closing a separating zipper. A stiff waterproof zipper may need product-specific care rather than a household lubricant.
